Property Tax Assessments Received by all Property Owners
All property owners in Colorado recently received their property tax assessment in May which will be used to calculate your property tax bill for 2026 and 2027. While some property owners saw a small decline from the massive tax increases in the last two-year cycle, property taxes are on the rise again. The state legislature did not pass any legislation this year to continue the reduction of property taxes for 2026 or future years. In fact, some of last year’s reduction legislation has expired. Unfortunately, most residential and commercial property tax bills will increase again in 2026.
As Jefferson County Treasurer, I worked with several legislators this session and supported two efforts to make property tax payments easier on property owners and seniors. One bill allowed the senior exemption to be portable to a new property purchase by a senior, and the other allowed property tax payments in four payments rather than two payments. Unfortunately, the state legislature did not pass either of these taxpayer friendly bills (HB25-1156 and HB25-1199).
As your State Treasurer, I will fight for meaningful property tax reform in the legislature. The burden has become too great—it’s time to take action.
